Wanted: Innovative healthcare solutions

The NHS is seeking innovative business ideas that could improve patient flow on acute wards and increase independence for children with long-term medical conditions.

More than £1 million is being made available to address the challenges, which have been identified by Academic Health Science Networks.

Acute care takes up around half of NHS spend. Improved management of patients in and out of acute care is seen as a significant opportunity to be more efficient.

UK Research Councils tackle global challenges

Five of the UK Research Councils have announced the first calls from the new £1.5 billion Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

Worth more than £40 million, the new calls are in non-communicable diseases, global infection and agriculture and food systems. Specific challenges include reducing and preventing diseases in humans and farmed animals; ensuring a safe, nutritious and sustainable supply of food for a growing population; and improving the life-long health of billions of people in low and middle income countries.

Brexit: UK patients could miss out on latest medical innovations

Patients in the UK would miss out on groundbreaking clinical trials by voting to leave the EU, Britain's pharmaceuticals trade body has warned.

The European Union Clinical Trials Regulation, due to come into effect at the end of 2018, is set to harmonise procedures for the assessment of applications for clinical trials. The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) said Brexit would see patients in the UK fall out of this new system, leaving EU patients ahead in accessing the latest innovative clinical research.
