Through the Knowledge Gateway, the University of Essex is driving business innovation and growth across the East of England region.

Set in mature parkland and accessed via the A133, the Knowledge Gateway on our Colchester Campus is set to become the location of choice in the eastern region for knowledge-based enterprises in science, technology and the creative sector.

Big data strengths
Drawing on our global reputation for analytics and data science and outstanding support for SMEs, the Knowledge Gateway is set to employ more than 2,000 people and is home to the Economic and Social Research Council Business and Local Government Data Research Centre, Institute for Analytics and Data Science, UK Data Archive and Administrative Data Service and Network. Co-located, these organisations have been established to share our expertise to help companies, non-profit organisations and the academic community enhance their knowledge of data analytics and use data more effectively.

The University’s vibrant new flagship, carbon-neutral Essex Business School building is also located on the Knowledge Gateway. It fosters and enables innovative research, looking at data exploration on internationally-leading work in quantitative social science and human rights, business and finance analytics, artificial intelligence techniques and statistical methods.

Investment in innovation
By 2016 the Knowledge Gateway has had £13m infrastructure investment, and Parkside Office Village, the hotspot for small businesses, is now home to a cluster of 20 successful and growing SMEs. To meet demand, a further 5,500 sq ft of vibrant office space will be available from summer 2016. Plans are in place to build a major 37,000 sq ft £10 million Innovation Centre for summer 2017 – this will have the potential to accommodate up to 50 start-ups and SMEs wishing to grow and scale-up. In addition, the University is offering scope for bespoke building development on the Knowledge Gateway, for office or R&D space with a design and build service for units from 5,000 sq ft upwards in plots adjacent to Parkside Office Village, and units from 15,000 to 120,000 sq ft on other sites on the Knowledge Gateway.

Innovation Centre - University of Essex Knowledge Gateway

A major £10 million Innovation Centre at the University of Essex’s Knowledge Gateway was granted formal planning permission in December 2015.  The aim of the Innovation Centre is to drive business growth in the Eastern region by providing space where start-ups can grow, and scale-up. The Innovation Centre will provide a focal point on the University’s 43-acre science and technology park, the Knowledge Gateway, offering all the many benefits of a campus co-location. It is anticipated to be ready during 2017-18.
