“Businesses are given the tools they need to grow and move into new markets.”
Prof Liz Towns-Andrews, CEO, 3M BIC
The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Huddersfield. Opened in 2013. It is a state-of-the-art building, offering a one-stop-shop for businesses that want to experience dynamic growth through its bespoke, innovation led business model.
3M BIC promotes business growth, open innovation and facilitates business to academia collaboration. High growth, high-tech companies can spin-in and co-locate alongside the University to promote knowledge transfer and help grow collaborations and influence regional growth and regeneration.
Accelerating business growth
Although it is not sector-specific, 3M BIC’s unique ecosystem is designed for high-tech businesses. Current tenants are from the healthcare, software development and engineering sectors, including the National Physical Laboratory’s (NPL) Northern Hub, a centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technologies available, and Ionix Advanced Technologies, a leading manufacturer of high temperature piezoelectric ceramics and ultrasound devices. Tenants are encouraged to forge partnerships with other tenants and beyond to aid business growth and innovation.
The Centre acts as a gateway to the University of Huddersfield’s research centres and can opens doors to national and international markets. Businesses can access the latest technology for advanced manufacturing and engineering projects, as well as technical and commercial support.
With its flexible office spaces, 3M BIC can cater for all business sizes at all stages of development, from business start-ups and SMEs to larger companies. Offices to seat between one and twenty occupants, and larger open plan areas can be rented out on long-term agreements and hot desk facilities on short-term. Tenants pay an inclusive rent on furnished suites which covers business rates, utilities, broadband/telephony and allocated parking. Tenants also have access to high performance computing, a design studio and a general workshop to assist in ground-breaking research and development.
Non-tenant businesses can become part of the Centre’s ethos through its Network Membership. With three levels available (Solo, Corporate and Professional Services), companies of all sizes can become part of a wider support network, as well as benefit from the following:
- access to over 1,000 businesses of all sizes
- opportunity to market their business and services direct to SMEs
- designed to bring companies together to aid business growth
- collaborative opportunities with the University of Huddersfield (subject to certain criteria)
- access to specialist events and seminars
- discount off meeting and conference spaces equipped with the latest AV equipment
- hot desk facilities available on a daily basis
- access to state-of-the-art technology
The 3M BIC also houses the Duke of York Young Enterprise Centre (DOYYEC), a business hub for students and graduates from the University of Huddersfield starting their own businesses. The hub provides office space, meeting facilities, networking opportunities, and support and mentoring to encourage business growth.
Meeting, Conference and Event Facilities
3M BIC boasts a wide range of air conditioned meeting rooms and conference facilities available for hire to suit any event requirement. All spaces are furnished with quality audio visual equipment, and range from small spaces suitable for one-to-one meetings to full presentation and exhibition suites with a capacity of 100.
Below are the options available:
The building’s impressive entrance houses a high definition 80” touch screen monitor ideal for informal presentations and networking events.
Presentation Suite and Exhibition Space
These fully-equipped presentation rooms are ideal for events with 80-100 delegates and come with full high definition projection systems, complete with a 3 metre wide screen and two wall mounted 42” screens allowing those at the back of the room to see the main presentation. All supported by a speaker system linked to radio microphones. The Presentation Suite has an additional 80” wall mounted monitor for smaller meetings or events, and the Exhibition Space boasts a mezzanine terrace overlooking the reception area, ideal for serving refreshments.
These meeting rooms comfortably seat up to 14 people with LCD dual-touch presentation monitors and stereo sound systems.
For a formal meeting, the Board Room is equipped with a high definition 80” touch screen for presentations and brain-storming using built-in software, as well as three 60” monitors for multiple displays.

Gateway to Innovation
3M BIC’s state-of-the-art Innovation Avenue houses revolutionary facilities and high performance computing systems for the manufacturing and engineering sectors. Equipment currently available includes:
SyiL X7 Plus CNC Milling Machine – a 3-axis machine tool used for small scale manufacturing/prototyping and to test new measurement technologies being developed and/or evaluated by the research group.
Alicona Infinite Focus – an optical 3D micro-coordinate system for measuring form and surface roughness of high precision components (e.g. aero engine turbine blades)
Fisba Optik – a portable digital interferometer for surface measurement of flat and spherical surfaces, such as optical components (lenses).
Taylor Hobson TalyMaster – a high precision inspection system combining roughness, roundness and contour measurement.
EOS FORMIGA P 110 – a plastic laser-sintering system for the direct manufacture of limited series, spare parts and functional prototypes, allowing design and engineering to work closely together across many sectors including transport and healthcare.
Acoustic Camera - an array of microphones used to locate the sources of sound and create an image superimposed on an optical image. The acquisition permits quick images to be taken live, or longer ‘exposures’ reveal more detail and allow post-processing.
Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) - a very high-resolution type of scanning probe microscopy used for imaging, measuring, and manipulating matter at the nanoscale. The information is gathered by "feeling" the surface with a mechanical probe.
Brüker x-Ray fluorescence – offering the non-destructive elemental analysis of pigments and metals from engineering and healthcare as well as antique artefacts.
The 3D Visualisation and Modelling Suite provides businesses with access to facilities for 3D visualisation and complex mathematical modelling for use in design and product development and managing large datasets.
The Centre also provides access to a vast range of measurement, scanning, analytical and other equipment, with expert staff from the University of Huddersfield.
The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is situated in close proximity to the University of Huddersfield. It is ideally located near to the town’s bus and railway stations and its central UK location makes it easily accessible to the main motorway networks that link the North, South East and West.
“The environment fosters a spirit of innovation and encourages collaboration.”
